roadtripThis message is from Farm Fresh speeding across Texas, heading up to Louisville, Kentucky!  I’m in a car of serious theater-goers.  You know how some folks will drive across the state to see their favorite band?  This is the same thing, but with contemporary performance - we’re a car of four people heading across the country to see a show by the Rude Mechs in the Humana New Play Festival.  You’re thinking… what does that mean for AGAD?  Macro Road Trip!

Since going macro, one of the hardest things I’ve found to balance are my road trips - extended periods of travel without the comforts of my kitchen.  Macro roadtrips are something I’ve been exploring since the start of AGAD, and here are some things I’ve learned (and BONUS!  My macro packing list!).

We’re back! As of 3:30 AM this past Monday our monster road trip officially ended when we arrived in Austin. Including Andy’s trip from Virginia to Texas, we spent almost 25 days on the road, drove 5,000 miles and were filled to the eyeballs with more non-macro delicacies than I care to remember. Between the steak lunch that Andy’s parents held to send us off and the eggs florentine(s) that I couldn’t resist at numerous brunch dates (they are my personal breakfast weakness) and the ever-present, shape-shifting sucrose that met us at all stops on the trip – we were full up on non-macro foods and ready for some serious cleansing.

The first thing I notice each time I fall off or get back on the wagon (so to speak) is the intensity with which my body reacts.  Eating non-macro foods after a long stretch of sticking to macrobiotics brings about stomachaches, grogginess and a general thick, sludgy feeling. Moving from a non-macro habits to more consistent macro fare, usually gives me a two-day long headache and non-stop cravings for all the foods that were making me feel lousy the week before.

Two weeks ago, I took off for 10 days of travel and work - I had a gig in Pittsburgh and then another event in Minneapolis. I love traveling, and I love the thrill of working on the road.

And when I’m in a different city, either for work or vacation, I feel like I’m a cultural ambassador from the heartland of America. My form of diplomacy to Pittsburgh? Eat as many different Pittsburgh foods as possible, as often as possible. Tom’s Diner’s Hungry Man Special - a culinary landmark on the Southside! A little place called Elbow Room in the Shadyside neighborhood - what a sweet name, gotta eat there! Starbucks! I’ve never been to a Starbucks in Pittsburgh… I wonder if they’re any different? I guess I need to find out!

Wow. Somehow my ambassador food logic propels me forward, and I need to invite all the nations of the world into my embassy (stomach) for a week long party.

Cut to landing back in Virginia, Monday morning at 1am. My refrigerator is empty, my cupboards are empty, and I’ve got five 17-hour days ahead of me (7am - Midnight). There’s no time to buy groceries this entire week. What am I going to do?!?

Last week I wrote about the preparations for my first ever macrobiotic roadtrip. For two weeks, Nicole and I talked about what we’d pack in our cooler and bring along for snacks. Three days before we left, we started packing and buying groceries. It was 3am the night before leaving when we finished rolling the last bit of sushi.

Here’s our packing list:

I love roadtrips and I’ve got one just around the corner: 1200 miles from Austin, TX to Virginia in an unairconditioned Geo through the heart of the south in August. Hot mama! I’ve done this trip before and I love it.

Hundreds of hamburger stands along the freeway! Refreshers of beef jerky, sunflower seeds, coffee and Red Bull! An overnight stay in Memphis to eat at Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken! T’s generous “homemade” breakfast of straight-from-the-can biscuits and Jimmy Dean sausage gravy the next morning! The last time we took this trip, we would buy ice cream sandwiches and ‘artisan’ sodas at every gas stop to cool down. It was a gluttonous journey through roadside Americana.

In two days, we’re going to take our first macrobiotic roadtrip. For the past two weeks Nicole and I have been discussing our plan to make sure we stay healthy and avoid the temptations of fast food on the road. Here’s what we’ve come up with:
